A Calling For Karen

So, after 2 1/2 months in our new ward, I finally have been extended a calling! In fact, as of last Sunday, I've also been sustained and set apart...as the Mia-maid advisor in our ward.

This is a new venture for me. The only calling I've had in the YW organization is beehive advisor when I was expecting my first baby. I don't remember anything about it, and I wonder if we even had any active beehives in that ward.... So, this is one calling I have no experience in.

I checked the church website to learn more about my calling and discovered that my calling doesn't officially exist! It seems in basic wards, the YW presidency takes care of pretty much everything. I realize that wards have a lot of freedom to adjust the program is needed for their particular situation. I also realize that lots of wards have advisors for the YW classes. I just wish there were a little more info out there about what exactly I'm supposed to do. I have been told that training is forthcoming, and that I can expect to teach the girls every other Sunday. I also have high hopes that I can go to girls' camp! Yay!

The entire YW presidency was changed Sunday. Fortunately, the new president and her 1st and 2nd counselors have had experience in the YW organization. Hey, at least someone knows what they're doing!

For now, I view my position as an accessory to the presidency, particularly the 1st counselor, who is over the Mia-maids. I was also told by the bishop that I was to try to become close to the girls and set a good example for them. My pleasure!

We already had our first activity--a rather last minute outing to the local high school's production of Beauty and the Beast. One of the Laurels from our ward was in it. It was very crowded, a little stressful keeping track of all the girls (we lost one for awhile), but quite enjoyable and very well done.

Imaginary Letter to the Disney Corporation

Dear Disney People,

I happen to know that companies spend good money for advertising space. They have to pay to advertise on bus benches, buses themselves, billboards, TV or radio time, and I've even seen advertisements on cars. Companies also have to pay just have their name listed in a phone book.

Why, then, I ask you, do I have to pay for my little girl's shoes, which clearly advertise such Disney characters as Tinkerbell, Hannah Montana, and High School Musical one, two and three??

YOU SHOULD PAY ME TO BUY THOSE SHOES!!

Halloween 2008

How fun it was to have Grandma and Grandpa Stoddard join us for a pumpkin carving Family Home Evening the Monday before Halloween. Grandma was put in charge of taking pictures and Grandpa handled the frosting of the cookies. Everyone had a great time, and we all got to bed far too late!





This is how I spent most of the evening--preparing a carving pattern of Brigham Young. It turned out pretty well, though I had a little problem with the left eye where a fragile bridge piece broke and I had to try to prop things up with a toothpick. It was a little disappointing.







Here are the inventive costumes the kids decided to wear this year. Andre is CTR Boy and Dallin is the tacky gym kid.





Lisette repeated a fun costume from a couple of years ago. She's the biggest, cutest puppy in the litter!

Sunsets, Early Christmas and Cute Hats

Can you stand more sunset pictures? These were, I thought, particularly lovely. They are taken from my little balcony.




My brother-in-law decided we needed some bar stools to go with the bar in our dining area. He called it an early Christmas present. In October. That has to be a first! It was very thoughtful of him.

Meanwhile, my Etsy store has picked up again, since the weather is cooling. I've had several orders for hand knitted hats. Earlier this last week I caught a virus that made me so exhausted, all I felt like doing was staying in bed, listening to books on CDs and knitting. I got a lot accomplished! A Rose, by any other name...

When you have an unusual name like Dupaix, you come to expect people to have a problem spelling it, pronouncing it, etc. The most common mispronunciation is something like Duprey or dupree. Today we got a couple of pieces of mail that misspelled our name in ways that had us rolling with laughter.

From Tooele City, I received a check refunding my deposit. It was made out to Karen Dupzix. In the same mail pile was a post card from our mortgage broker addressed to the Dupaxi family. I'd never seen that one before either. Both are clearly just typographical errors, which of course wouldn't be caught by spell-check. I'm thinking of making a collection of name slaughtering samples of our last name! These would make a good start.

Love the View

When we were deciding what house to buy, the view from the master bedroom suite was definitely a big selling point in the one we purchased. Here are some samples of the view from our little balcony. I am looking forward to seeing the landscape covered in snow from up there...which should happen before too long.

Bib Maker Extraordinarre

The owner of a flower shop in Tooele orders bibs from me. She packages them in gift baskets with her flowers and other baby items. She says some of her customers just love my bibs. They are fun to design and make. By making my own bias binding, I can match the fabric and applique perfectly. These two pictures represent the latest order she placed for my bibs.




I got soooo excited yesterday when I found this box of tissues. It matches the paint in the master bathroom perfectly!! It is the first thing I've found that matches! Now, the really good news is that once the tissues are gone, I can take a piece of the carton to the store to find other things to match the bathroom. I am so glad my whole bedroom isn't this hard to match color!

General Conference at Our House

General Conference was wonderful! We finally have space for everyone to come and relax and even dine at our house. We hosted banana splits after the Priesthood session. Mom asked me to take these pictures of the family members who attended the session together this year. Quite a group of handsome men!

Freezer Issues

There it sits, all innocent looking, purring away in the garage. Last night it was not so innocent. We had plugged it into a GFI outlet that was apparently connected to another GFI outlet with a little red re-set button. Somehow, the connection got switched off, and, by the time we discovered that the freezer was without power, half of what was once frozen was no longer. Fortunately, the chicken was dense enough and low enough in the freezer that it was still frozen. The frozen corn and salsa did not fare so well. After Paul and I tried to track down the electrical problem, pushing every little red re-set button we could find, I frantically emptied the freezer and called neighbors and relatives and gave away salsa and not-so-frozen corn.

The really sad thing is the salsa was the only thing I had put up this year, and I had used wonderful tomatoes from our garden. It tasted great! Now, we have none. We have a freezer of great potential (empty).

Some really positive thoughts on the event: 1 - it gave us a chance to be of service to our new neighbors. 2 - Before we moved, I had gone through the freezer and gotten rid of most of what was in there, so there wasn't that much in it. 3 - It gave me a chance to clean out the freezer, which I failed to do when we moved it into the garage.

New Carpet and Old Friends

After searching for about a week, I finally found a fly swatter. You wouldn't think they'd be so hard to find. I have no idea what happened to the one we had before we moved. I got the one out of our trailer, and promptly broke it. I actually had to borrow my mom's! But, now, fortunately, I have acquired a lime green fly swatter of my very own, which is a good thing. I've swatted to death several flies and hornets that have made their way into my home. The front door to our home was open all day yesterday because we were having carpet installed. I'm really not sure why, but both the carpet layers and the laminate floor folks like to leave the front door and the garage door WIDE OPEN all the time they are working.

Anyway, we love our new carpet and flooring! It looks fabulous. Now we just have to put the furniture back and fix the platform in the theater room.

Yesterday I touched bases with a friend I met when we first moved into our Tooele ward. Her name is Michelle Johnston. I'll never forget how she and her family walked over with a plate of cookies, 11 years ago, and welcomed us into the ward. I got an email yesterday from her, which reminded me that she and her family had moved to somewhere around here. I was delighted to discover she lives only about 3 miles away, in Highland. She and her family stopped by last evening as a surprise; again bearing a plate of cookies! The kids have all grown so much! Amazingly, Michelle and Mike look exactly as they always have. Makes me wonder how they do it. We showed them the house and got caught up on news. It was great to see them.

Today I have been trying to decorate. I have a pile of pictures and quilts, and it's both fun and challenging to find places for everything. I wish I had the money to buy coordinating frames for a bunch of old family pictures and create a family history wall of sorts. I have some really cute family pictures of when our kids were little.

New kittens

We acquired two new kittens to add to our pet population. Their job is to catch any mice that might decide to come our way. One, Angel, is mostly white, with pale tan ears and tail. The other, Belle, has brown ears, nose and tail.

Trouble is, I think Angel might be a male. So, maybe Gabriel or something.

Meanwhile, one of our original cats decided to show up today. No idea where Caramel has been hanging out. Looks like we might end up with more cats than we bargained for.

We Painted the Master Bedroom

My sister and I painted the master bedroom last week. It used to be this light turquoise color that was really too overwhelming for me. We left the master bathroom that color, but I just couldn't handle it in the bedroom. It didn't match the bedding at all, and we even looked to see if we could find bedding that color at Wal-Mart. No luck. So, we painted it this nice light gold color, which I like much better.

A Big Move

Well, we never thought we'd do it, but our family moved out of Tooele. We have moved to be closer to Paul's work (which is having him work in Orem once a week, and will most likely move his job to Riverton), and we're also much closer to family. In fact, we have moved to Lehi, just about 5 blocks from Grandma and Grandpa and Aunt Becky and her family.

We got all of the kids registered in school and ended up having to pay about twice as much in school fees as we did in Tooele, and we didn't get all of that back either! What an expensive education year!

Our two cats seem to have wandered off. We kept them in a crate for about 3 days, and thought they'd become accustomed to the new area, but we haven't seen them since Sunday. It really is a shame. There is a vacant field near our home, and I am sure once the weather cools significantly the field mice will be looking for a warmer place to live. We will probably get another cat.

Folks in our new neighborhood have been very welcoming, and even helped us move in, but we crave familiarity. We were in Tooele for 11 years, and we are adjusting to not seeing anyone we know when we go to the store.

We love our new home! It has amazing views and a theater room! It is nice to live in a comparatively new home, too. This one is about 12 years old, as opposed to the 98 year old home we left. Today we are having laminate floors put in. Next week we should be getting new carpet put in on the main floor. My sister and I spent 2 days repainting the master bedroom. It used to be a strange mint green. Now it is light gold, which looks awesome when the afternoon sun streams in.

Pumpkin Carving 2007

It's pumpkin carving time again, and this year several of the kids wanted pumpkins carved in their likeness. It's not an easy process, and not one the younger kids can even do. So, Mom got busy on the computer and then at the pumpkin carving table.

I started with this photo of Ben. I tweaked it in Paint Shop Pro, and came up with a pattern.



The resulting carved up pumpkin looked like this. Not bad, but wait until the lights go out.






Pretty cool, huh? I have made a pattern of George Bush, but I don't know if I'm going to get to it. I still have 2 kids left to do.

Autumn in the Canyon

For Family Home Evening this week, we took a trip up a local canyon to look at the fall colors. We were afraid we were too late to see much, but we were pleasantly surprised at how very beautiful it was.


We had a storm come through a few days ago, and it left some snow on the ground up here. You really can't see it in the pictures, but there was snow on the ground!

Here are the kids posing for a picture. They're cold, and want to get back into the warm car. They really enjoyed the outing, though. There were cattle all over the place, and they were pointing them out all the way up and down the canyon.
